He lived from 1880 until 1950. Bro. Newton was raised in Friendship Lodge #7, Dixon, Illinois later affiliating with Mt. Herman Lodge #263, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is the author of one of Freemasonry’s classics, The Builders, on which this excerpt from a Short Talk Bulletin, published by the Masonic Service Association, was based.

Because the human soul is akin to God, and is endowed with powers to which no one may set a limit, it is and of right ought to be free. Thus, by the logic of its philosophy, not less than the inspiration of its faith, Masonry has been impelled to make its historic demand for liberty of conscience, for the freedom of the intellect, and for the right of all men to stand erect, unfettered and unafraid, equal before God and the law, each respecting the rights of his fellows.

Some day, when the cloud of prejudice has been dispelled by the searchlight of truth, the world will honor Masonry for its service to freedom of thought and the liberty of faith. No part of its history has been more noble, no principle of its teaching has been more precious than its age-long demand for the right and duty of every soul to seek that light by which no man was ever injured, and that truth which makes man free.

Down through the centuries -- often in times when the highest crime was not murder, but thinking, and the human conscience was a captive dragged at the wheel of the ecclesiastical chariot -- always and everywhere Masonry has stood for the right of the
soul to know the truth, and to look up unhindered from the lap of earth into the face of God. Not freedom from faith, but freedom of faith, has been its watchword.

The real question, after all, is not as to the quantity of life, but its quality – its depth, its purity, its fortitude, its fineness of spirit and gesture of soul. Hence the insistent emphasis of Masonry upon the building of character and the practice of righteousness; upon that moral culture without which man is rudimentary, and that spiritual vision without which intellect is the slave of greed or passion. What makes a man great and free of soul, here or anywhere, is loyalty to the laws of right, of truth, of purity, of love, and the lofty will of God.

How to live is the one matter; and the oldest man in his ripe age has yet to seek a wiser way than to build, year by year, upon a foundation of faith in God, using the Square of justice, the Plumb-line of rectitude, the Compass to restrain the passions, and the Rule by which to divide our time into labor, rest, and service to our fellows.

The Invisible Lodge

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pN_osddkh1c/R8quFNnfp2I/AAAAAAAAABo/6LazX8Ayhf0/s200/invisiblelodgeweblogo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173138526566328162" />http://www.invisiblelodge.org/

This Short Talk Bulletin was prepared by Worshipful Brother Walter J. Harmon, Past Master of Richmond Lodge No. 10, Richmond, Virginia, a magician for more than 28 years, and an active member of “The Invisible Lodge.”

The expression, “the magic of Free-masonry,” takes on a different meaning when one realizes the great number of professional and amateur magicians who are and have been members of the Ancient Craft. It was only natural that these skilled performers of the art of producing baffling effects and illusions should band together to share their interests with the Fraternity.

In the strictest sense of the word, Lodge, “the Invisible Lodge” is not a Lodge. It is an international organization of Freemasons who also have as their vocation or avocation - MAGIC. The Invisible Lodge was formed in 1953 by Sir Felix Korim of England, who served as the organization’s first President. Member-ship in The Invisible Lodge has been accorded to more than 800 selected Masons throughout the world, including such notable and well-known figures in the world of magic as Black-stone, Okito, Ballentine, Levanto, McDonald Hirch and Jack Gwynne.

Joined by the common bond of magic, these Brethren who may be or have been professional entertainers, hobbyists, collectors or students of both magic and Freemasonry, combine those interests to produce the organization known as “The Invisible Lodge.”

Just as the roots of Freemasonry are entrenched in antiquity, so are those of Magic. Magic is a word referring to the craft of the magi. The magi were the priests of the ancient Medes and Persians. After the rise of Zoroaster, they became the priests of the Zoroastrian religion. The ancient Greeks and Hebrews knew them as Astrologers, Interpreters of Dreams, and givers of Omens. The reign of the priests was more than eight thousand years ago. Zoroaster is believed to have lived about five thousand years before our era. He is said to have been an unusual child who was gifted to have visions at an early age. Born in Azerbaijan in Northern Persia, he taught a belief in one God, the existence of the devil, and the doctrine of immortality. It is alleged that these priests (the magi) predicted the birth of the Christ Child and were the ones who brought him the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. As ruling monarchs, the priests were referred to as “Kings of the Orient” and “the wise men.”

There are certain similarities between the order of the Magi and Freemasonry which should be noted. The word, “Dao” is Persian in origin. It signifies Light and Wisdom and is the forerunner of the word Deity (Bright One). Fire or light was used in the rituals of the magi to symbolize intelligence, knowledge and wisdom. It is recorded that during the initiation, the Arch Magus sat upon a throne of gold in the East.

The established dates of the reign of the Magi was five thousand years before the Trojan War, which took place in 1200 B.C. King Solomon began his temple in 966 B.C. This gives room for interesting speculation.

The Magi were Kings, Priests, Lawyers, Engineers, etc. In essence, they embodied most of the knowledge of their time, earning the respect of the people. It is the hypothesis of some historians that the Magi even possessed knowledge that has since been lost to man and that they possessed powers that would seem awesome to us even today.

Always in history there have been those who sought knowledge for knowledge’s sake and those who sought to use it to manipulate and enslave the less informed. As the knowledge of those ancient wise ones became the specializations of medicine, law, astronomy, and philosophy, there were those who specialized in those little known principles of the miracle worker and became just that. These individuals, whether in quest for power or riches, formed a special priesthood that manipulated the ignorant and robbed the credulous.

Magic has passed through many forms and many lands until today it is deception for the purpose of entertainment with the trappings and refinements of those lands.

Masonry, in its language and ritual, retains much of the various sects and institutions it passed through before arriving at its present state.

In Masonry, as in Magic, we meet with Chaldean, Indian, Egyptian, Jewish, and Christian symbols and ideas.

It is little wonder then that at some time in history a group of men with an interest in both Magic and Masonry would form an organization that would embody the two as its focus.

Many Masons are surprised to find that many of the Great Magicians, whose names are familiar, and many others were active Masons and active in the various appendant bodies. Many could and did tell interesting anecdotes about their Masonic experiences. One of those deals with Brother Harry Keller, famous for the floating lady illusion which he introduced in this country. Brother Keller was shipwrecked in the Bay of Biscay and his Blue Lodge diploma went to the bottom of the sea. It was later recovered by divers who brought up baggage from the sunken steamer. He later remarked it had been viewed by Grand Master Neptune and returned.

Membership in the Invisible Lodge is limited to those persons interested in Magic, who have been raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. The publication of the Invisible Lodge is called the “Trestle Board” and is pub-lished quarterly, giving information on the Masonic and Magical activities of the members.

The annual stated meeting of the Invisible Lodge is held in conjunction with the Colum-bus, Ohio Magic Fest. The date and time are announced annually. Additional meetings are held at the National Conventions of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and The Society of American Magicians as well as recognized Regional Conventions.

The Invisible Lodge publishes Bert Douglas’ book, “Masonic Magic,” which is the sole work devoted to presentation of Magic with a Masonic interpretation.

Members are encouraged to participate in Masonic education programs by using their Magic abilities and skills to illustrate the under-lying principles of Masonic philosophy, as well as providing entertainment within the Fraternity. They are further urged to labor in the non-magical areas by the Invisible Lodge’s award system.

The first of these, the ZB Award, so named after the second president of the Invisible Lodge, Dr. Zina Bennett, is a certificate presented to any member who gives a total of five certified gratis performances for the residents of a Masonic Orphanage, Masonic Home for the Aged, or the patients of a Shrine Hospital. Another award of the Invisible Lodge is the Masters Award, consisting of a certificate and wand presented to a Brother who has received the coveted 33x of the Scottish Rite. Another award is presented annually, known as the Harvey Award, based on the traditional invisible rabbit, to a Brother who has served the Invisible Lodge or Masonry with distinction.

Membership in the Invisible Lodge is not necessary to be a recipient.

The meetings of the Invisible Lodge are held at midnight, with a special ritual prepared for it that combine the elements of Masonry and Magic. At these meetings, honors are given to both the oldest and youngest members present.

Probably the most singular important lesson to be learned by the average Mason from the Invisible Lodge is that all of the great Magicians saw fit to give a certain amount of their time to Masonry and with their travel and exposure to the blandishments of the world felt that this brotherhood was of value.

Another lesson lies in the origins of both Masonry and Magic. Rooted and entwined in antiquity as both are, the mystical qualities of both manifest themselves in our inner feelings and convince us of the lasting value of both.

In our hurried view of the history, we made mention of knowledge that was lost. Of course this came about as the result of persecution of both the thinking individual and the organizations to which they belonged, by those who would bend mankind to a life of superstitious slavery. The individual Mason cannot and should not lose sight of the sacrifices of our predecessors and our debt to them to preserve our ways and customs in their entirety and guard them against exploitation by the politically ambitious.

2008 Annual Inspection and Dinner

We held our annual inspection and dinner on Monday, February 25th. We are trying this change as we feel that it would provide a better opportunity for the brethren to gather as friends and to provide a time to invite prospective members to meet with us to learn more about our organization and its functions.

2) We will be providing printed copies of the previous meeting(s) minutes for your review prior to the stated meeting. This will allow us to move quicker in the execution of the business portion of our meetings. We will still ask for any additions, deletions or corrections to those printed minutes.

2008 Important Dates and Events:

As many of you already know, 2008 represents the 200th anniversary of Freemasonry in Ohio. As such, there are many events planned throughout the year that your officers will be attending. Please be aware that we desire and are encouraging your participation in these events.

One such event is the re-dedication of the Statehouse Cornerstone and Parade scheduled for June 21st. Continue to look for more information on this and other events as we move through the next several months.

In April of 2008, we will have the honor of opening and closing lodge for the annual ‘Masonic Night at the Shrine’. Please join us for this event as it is a wonderful opportunity to honor and support one of our own members.

We are currently planning two dinner events and a Masonic Movie Night that will be open to the public. These events will be the primary sources of ‘donation gathering’ in support of the Special Olympics for this year. They represent an opportunity to re-engage with our community and each other while supporting a worthy cause.

Annual Inspection:

Our annual inspection will be held in the EA degree on the night of Monday, February 25th, 2008. As always, your attendance and support is appreciated.

Lodge Participation Needs:

Last, but certainly not least, I am personally soliciting your participation at our stated meetings, ritual specials and other events. Over the past several years all lodges have been impacted by dwindling membership and participation. Blendon Lodge is no exception to that trend. The past year has brought many changes to the officer line and many changes in the number of faces available to participate on a regular basis.

Due to this reality, I am also asking that anyone who has an interest in participating more fully with the lodge to please contact me or one of the other current officers to express that interest. Your lodge needs qualified and interested members in its officer line and in the support and planning of its special events and ritual work.

Without you, we cannot succeed.

Fraternally,

The Officers of Blendon Lodge

Templar Reprieve

Knights Templar win heresy reprieve after 700 years

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Knights Templar, the medieval Christian military order accused of heresy and sexual misconduct, will soon be partly rehabilitated when the Vatican publishes trial documents it had closely guarded for 700 years.

A reproduction of the minutes of trials against the Templars, "'Processus Contra Templarios -- Papal Inquiry into the Trial of the Templars'" is a massive work and much more than a book -- with a 5,900 euros (4,125 pounds) price tag.

"This is a milestone because it is the first time that these documents are being released by the Vatican, which gives a stamp of authority to the entire project," said Professor Barbara Frale, a medievalist at the Vatican's Secret Archives.
"Nothing before this offered scholars original documents of the trials of the Templars," she told Reuters in a telephone interview ahead of the official presentation of the work on October 25.

The epic comes in a soft leather case that includes a large-format book including scholarly commentary, reproductions of original parchments in Latin, and -- to tantalise Templar buffs -- replicas of the wax seals used by 14th-century inquisitors.

Reuters was given an advance preview of the work, of which only 799 numbered copies have been made.

One parchment measuring about half a metre wide by some two metres long is so detailed that it includes reproductions of stains and imperfections seen on the originals.

Pope Benedict will be given the first set of the work, published by the Vatican Secret Archives in collaboration with Italy's Scrinium cultural foundation, which acted as curator and will have exclusive world distribution rights.

The Templars, whose full name was "Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon", were founded in 1119 by knights sworn to protecting Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land after the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099.

They amassed enormous wealth and helped finance wars of some European monarchs. Legends of their hidden treasures, secret rituals and power have figured over the years in films and bestsellers such as "The Da Vinci Code".

The Knights have also been portrayed as guardians of the legendary Holy Grail, the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper before his crucifixion.

The Vatican expects most copies of the work to be bought up by specialised libraries at top universities and by leading medieval scholars.

Freemasonry in Comics

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pN_osddkh1c/RrSHcP9WouI/AAAAAAAAAA0/9KdNmS3Xb3o/s400/super_architect.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5094845997852828386" />

Superman
The illustration above is reprinted from "Superman Adventures 34." Traveling to Kafiristan (in modern Afghanistan) with the intention of becoming kings, the two make a very convenient discovery: the natives are in possession of the secrets of both the First and Second Degrees of Freemasonry, but not those of the Third Degree. Dravot puts on his Master Mason's apron, whereupon the natives recognise the Third Degree symbol as their own sacred symbol concealed on the bottom of a stone. As luck would (again) have it, the stone on which the symbol is engraved is the very stone upon which Dravot is then sitting. Dravot immediately declares himself "Grand Master of All Kafiristan" and also Co-King of Kafiristan along with Peachey. The conspiracy is eventually discovered, and results in the deaths of both men.

The film of 1975 is very true to the book, but goes into less masonic detail. The different degrees are not mentioned by name. The identification of Dravot as a supposed god is made by the fact that he wears a pendant bearing a symbol, which is the sacred symbol of the Kafir natives. The symbol used in the film is not named, but is clearly shown, and is simply the Square & Compasses symbol of Freemasonry. The other key difference between the book and the film is that Carnehan does not die in the film - both men die in the book itself.

Kipling was himself an active Freemason, and there are many other examples of masonic references in his work.

From Wiki entry on Daniel Dravot

National Treasure (2004) - Plot Summary

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pN_osddkh1c/RittZ2tKCrI/AAAAAAAAAAU/EbtgMsFaEz0/s320/78m.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5056255297602587314" />
Benjamin Franklin Gates descends from a family of treasure-seekers who've all hunted for the same thing: a war chest hidden by the Founding Fathers after the Revolutionary War. Ben's close to discovering its whereabouts, as is his competition, but the FBI is also hip to the hunt. Written by IMDb Editors

Ben Gates comes from a family of treasure hunters. Now his grandfather believes that the forefathers' buried a treasure somewhere in the country and have placed clues everywhere but unfortunately the clues are highly cryptic and scaterred all over the place. Now Ben thinks he has found it but it only leads him to another clue which is on the back of the Declaration of Independence. Now one of his associates Ian wants to steal it so that they could get the clue but Ben refuses to do it so he tries to kill Ben. But Ben evades him and tries to warn the authorities about Ian's plans but they don't believe him. So Ben takes it upon himself to steal it in order to protect it. And he does but Abigail Chase the curator of the National Archives, where it is kept, discovers what he has done and tries to stop him but gets caught in the crossfire between Ben and Ian, so Ben takes her with him. While she doesdn't believe him, he is determined to prove he is right about the treasure. But it won't be easy cause Ian's always a step behind him and he is being hunted by the FBI. Written by rcs0411@yahoo.com

Since childhood, Benjamin Franklin Gates has known that he is decended from a long line of people whose job is to guard a treasure hidden by the Founding Fathers, who hid clues to its whereabouts in the country's currency and on the back of the Declaration of Independence. Now, he has learned of a plot to steal the Declaration, and has only one option: steal it himself. Even if he pulls off this monumental task, keeping the treasure safe is still going to be incredibly hard, especially since the FBI has also gotten wind of the scheme. Some 12,000 people from all walks of life attended his funeral.

Almost two hundred years later, his death is mourned by thousands of devotees throughout the world, who honor him, not only for his outstanding cultural talents, but as a doyen of democracy and a prophet of international brotherhood.

Burns’ timeless verses and songs of tenderness, wit and beauty have been translated into thirty-seven languages, while his Scottish birthplace in Alloway, near Ayr, has become a “Mecca,” visited by over 250,000 people each year.

So universally accepted has “Auld Lang Syne” become as a song of parting, that a major Japanese department store in Tokyo now plays it over its public address system as a diplomatic way of advising shoppers to conclude their purchases and depart the premises. A further example of the song’s universality can be found in Lodge Norad (Nation) in The Czech Republic, which I had the pleasure of visiting in 1992. Re-established in 1990 after the fall of Communism, Norad operates under the Scottish Constitution and closes its fortnightly meetings with “Auld Lang Syne,” sung in Czech! The lodge meets in what was once the cellar of the Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia, built by French stonemasons in 1234.

Robert Burns was initiated on 4 July 1781 in St. David’s Lodge (now No. 133 Scottish Constitution), Tarbolton, after paying an entry fee of twelve shillings and six pence. As to his three degree ceremonies, there has been some disagreement where these took place. The consensus is that they were held in a local public house (also used by the Bachelors Club), run by John Richards, a steward of the Lodge.

His wit, high intelligence, zeal and consummate oratory, made Burns an admirable choice for pro-motion and, on 27 June 1784, he was elected Depute Master (the local Squire being the nominal Master).

“Oft, honored with supreme command, Presided o’er the sons of light.”

With his warm and abiding love for the whole brotherhood of mankind, Burns found in Freemasonry a splendid vehicle for the development of his philosophy.

In many ways the eighteenth century was strangely adapted to enable the roots of Freemasonry to be nurtured and developed. The need to meet in fraternal fellowship was met by the foundation of lodges.

It is well known that Burns was about to depart for Jamaica just before his poems were published on 31 July 1786 (the famous “Kilmamock Edition”). It is less well known that he came perilously close to joining the stream of Scottish martyrs being deport-ed as political prisoners to Australia.

Burns lived in troublesome times, typified by the American Declaration of Independence in 1776 the French Revolution in 1792 and the fervent “Reform Movement” in Britain striving to correct an iniquitous electoral system.

As might be expected, giving expression to calls for liberty, equality and fraternity met with stem opposition from the deeply entrenched “establishment” classes, with their vested interest in property, politics and religion.

What is the secret of the everlasting popularity of this remarkable man of humble birth, who had only three years of formal schooling? Why is he remembered when the two monarchs and eleven prime ministers who dominated the scene during his short life have been virtually forgotten? Why is it that others of his ilk in the literary world are respected, but Burns is loved? The answer is that he wrote from the heart and was the voice of the common man and woman. He was their advocate, publicist, philosopher and friend.

Burns had not only the vision of a better world, but the capacity to articulate that message. He was a revolutionary reformer, a vigorous and tireless opponent of oppression, privilege, hypocrisy and racism.

“Then let us pray that come it may As come it will for a’ that That sense and worth, o’er a’ the earth, May bear the gree, and a’ that!

(Have the superiority)

For a’ that, and a’ that,

It’s coming yet for a’ that,

That man to man, the warld o’er,

Shall brothers be for a’ that!”

Nancy McDonald encapsulated the Burnsian philosophy in three verses. She wrote of Scotland, but the sentiments which she expressed apply equally to other countries having an affinity with Burns.

Oh Rabbie Burns we need ye noo (now)
When shades of discord dim each broo (brow)
And o’er this tired bewildered world, the flags of hatred are unfurled.
We crave your wisdom and your pen,
to cleanse the pride-soiled hearts of men
And gae o’er the nation back its proof of steadfastness and lasting truth.
In every land, in every tongue, Your name is loved, your songs are sung.
You raised the common things of earth, to gems of priceless grace and worth.
You traced the Great Almighty plan of love and brotherhood of man.
And jaundiced now though things may be, they canna dim your prophecy.
Oh Rabbie, gifted poet, seer, to whom your native land was dear.
Hard times you knew and failing health, prevented you from acquiring wealth.
But never did you turn away from works that still enthrall today.
And now the soul of Scotland turns. to bow to you, immortal Burns.

Robert Burns is not only for Scotland, but for all the world; he was one of that small band who wrote for all time and for all people.

Burns left to the world teachings which must be regarded as subtle religion—the teaching of brotherhood, honesty, pride, and independence of love and friendship. He voiced the spirit of equality and was unswerving in his devotion to liberty.

No wonder that on the anniversary of his birth-day, 25 January, more than half a million people assemble at Burns Suppers under the banners of the Union Jack, the Stars and Stripes, the Maple Leaf, and a plethora of others, to pay tribute to “The Immortal Memory of Robert Burns.”

If only political parties, commercial organizations and individuals would adopt his credo:

“Whatever mitigates the woes, or increases the happiness of others, this is my criterion of goodness, and whatever injures society at large, or any individual in it, this is my measure of iniquity!”
Further information

For brethren desirous of further pursuing the fascinating story of Robert Burns and his works, it is recommended they contact The Robert Burns Collection, Department of Language and Literature, Mitchell Library, North Street, Glasgow, GE 7DN, Scotland. It houses the finest collection of Burns material in the world.

For a condensed version of Burnsianism, one of the best is “Brithers—A Minute a Day with Burns” by Peter Egglemont. First published by J. Avery & Co. Ltd., Aberdeen, Scotland in May 1933.

The Kirkwall Scroll

On the west wall of the temple of Lodge Kirkwall Kilwinning No. 38(2) in Orkney hangs one of the oldest and most important Masonic artefacts in the world. The complete hanging cloth is eighteen feet six inches long and five feet six inches wide. It consists of a centre strip which contains around one hundred Masonic symbols, and two outer strips which appear to be maps. L. signifying "in the Year of Light!' Thus, 1801 is A.L. 5801. This has a symbolic reference to the Light of Masonry.

In the Scottish Rite, (now known as the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite), the Era also begins from the date of the Creation; but Masons of that Rite, using the Jewish chronology, would call the year 1801, A. M. or Anno Mundi (in the year of the world), 5541. Sometimes the initials A.H. are used, signifying Anno Hebraico, or "in the Hebrew Year!' They have also adopted the Hebrew months, therefore the year ends with them on the 16th of September, and the new year begins on the 17th of the same month, which is the first of Tisri. The A. and P Rite uses the Egyptian Calendar and the Era oooooo, ooo to denote an indefinite period of vast extent.

In the York Rite, the year begins on the 1st of January; but in the French Rite it begins on the 1st of March, and instead of the months receiving their usual names they are designated numerically, as first, second, &c. In a French Masonic document the 1st of January, 1801, would thus be called the first day of the eleventh Masonic month, Anno Lucis, 5801. The French sometimes use L'an de la V. L, Vraie Lumdre, Signifying "Year of True Light!"

Royal Arch Masons date from the commencement of the Second Temple, which was 530 years before the Christian Era; hence A.D. 1801 would be represented by Anno Inventionis (A.. INV'.), 2331 in Capitular Freemasonry.

Knights Templar have also their mode of chronology, taking their year one from the organisation of the Order, A.D. 1118; so that Anno Ordinis would be A.O. 683, instead of A.D. 1801.

Other Degrees have their fanciful chronology, but the foregoing are the only styles of consequence.

Idiot's Guide To Freemasonry - Review

Editorial Review

What is the truth about the Masons suggested in Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code? As a Freemason myself, I can state that the theory is not entirely accepted among members of the craft. Many have climbed onboard the Templar origin wagon, while many hold to the old belief that we are descended from the Medieval or even Biblical stone cutters. Those that follow the Stone Masons theory are generally older Brethren who have a hard time accepting anything new. For those who accept the Templar theory, it is largely held that the Templars fled to Scotland under the guise of stone cutters and established Masonry as a continuation, albeit a covert one of their order.

Before embarking on this discussion, I would like to add an opinion of my own that is shared by my co-author Alan Butler, regarding the Scottish Templar theory. While it is widely held that the Templar fleet disappeared into the night and set sail for the Scottish coastline, we contend that this is not likely to be the case on the pure basis of the rough north Sea and the type of ships primarily used by the Templars. The bulk of the ships were Mediterranean style Galleys that would not have stood the rough waves of the North Sea. Yes the Templars had other ships used for this purpose such as the Genoese-built ship, "the Falcon", but according to the transcripts of the Templar trials it was fifty Galleys that escaped. Galleys were best suited for traveling the coastline to places like Portugal where it is known that brother knights were accepted into King Denis' new order, "the Knights of Christ." Although it is not the providence of this article, Alan and I have our own view and theory of where many Templars fled to and it is across land to Switzerland where the forest Cantons had united into a union the very same year that the Crusading cause was lost with the fall of Acre in 1291.

With regard to the Scottish Templars, we think the Mass exodus theory takes away from the fact that there already were Templars in Scotland as there were some Templar Churches and Preceptories in the country. Not only this, it is quite possible that English Templars placing allegiance to their own order above their native land may have fled North in preparation for what would surely come. Still the popular theory is that of Scottish Templarism. The question remains where did this come to be connected with the Masonic Fraternity?

In their excellent book, "The Temple and the Lodge", Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh put forth the argument that the fleeing Templars went en masse to Scotland where they evolved into the Freemasons. While this theory is popular among researchers, readers and certainly Freemasons, it is not a new idea of the aforementioned authors. In fact the Masonic historian Albert Mackey and Arthur Edward Waite, the occultist and a Masonic Historian in his own right, were writing about this theory in the 1800's and it was not new then either. If not Baigent and Leigh, Mackey or even Waite, then who do we owe credit for the "Freemasons came from the Templars" theory? The answer to this question is actually two men. Andrew Michael Ramsey and Baron Karl Von Hund, whom we will look at in turn.

To read the rest of the article click here

The All-Seeing-Eye on the Dollar Bill

S. Brent Morris, 33°, Grand Cross

There is no tie between the eye-in-the-pyramid symbol, as on the dollar bill and the great seal of the United States, and Freemasonry.

Historians must be cautious about many well-known “facts.” George Washington chopped down a cherry tree when a boy and confessed the deed to his father. Abner Doubleday invented the game of baseball. Masons inserted some of their emblems (chief among them the eye in the pyramid) into the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States. These historical “facts” are widely popular, commonly accepted, and equally false. The eye in the pyramid (emblazoned on the dollar bill, no less) is often cited as “evidence” that sinister conspiracies abound which will impose a “New World Order” on an unsuspecting populace. Depending on whom you hear it from, the Masons are planning the takeover themselves, or are working in concert with European bankers, or are leading (or perhaps being led by) the Illuminati (whoever they are). The notion of a worldwide Masonic conspiracy would be laughable, if it weren't being repeated with such earnest gullibility by conspiracists like Pat Robertson.

Sadly, Freemasons are sometimes counted among the gullible who repeat the tall tale of the eye in the pyramid, often with a touch of pride. They may be guilty of nothing worse than innocently puffing the importance of the Fraternity (as well as themselves), but they're guilty nonetheless. The time has come to state the truth plainly and simply.

The Great Seal of the United States of America is not a Masonic emblem, nor does it contain hidden Masonic symbols. The details are there for anyone to check, who's willing to rely on historical fact rather than hysterical fiction. Benjamin Franklin was the only Mason on the first committee charged with creating a design for the great seal, and his suggestions had no Masonic content. None of the final designers of the seal were Masons. The interpretation of the eye on the seal is subtly different from the interpretation used by Masons. The eye in the pyramid is not nor has ever been a Masonic symbol.

The First Committee:

On Independence Day 1776, a committee was created to design a seal for the new American nation. The committee's members were Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams, with Pierre Du Simitière as artist and consultant.

Of the four men involved, only Benjamin Franklin was a Mason, and he contributed nothing of a Masonic nature to the committee's proposed design for a seal.

Du Simitire, the committee's consultant and a non-Mason, contributed several major design features that made their way into the ultimate design of the seal: “the shield, E Pluribus Unum, MDCCLXXVI, and the eye of providence in a triangle.”

The eye of providence on the seal thus can be traced not to the Masons, but to a non-Mason consultant to the committee. The single eye was a well-established artistic convention for an 'omniscient Ubiquitous Deity' in the medallic art of the Renaissance. Du Simitire, who suggested using the symbol, collected art books and was familiar with the artistic and ornamental devices used in Renaissance art.“

This was the same cultural iconography that eventually led Masons to add the all-seeing eye to their symbols.

The Second and Third Committees:

Congress declined the first committee's suggestions as well as those of its 1780 committee. Francis Hopkinson, consultant to the second committee, had several lasting ideas that eventually made it into the seal: "white and red stripes within a blue background for the shield, a radiant constellation of thirteen stars, and an olive branch."

Hopkinson's greatest contribution to the current seal came from his layout of a 1778 50-dollar colonial note in which he used an unfinished pyramid in the design.

The third and last seal committee of 1782 produced a design that finally satisfied Congress. Charles Thomson, Secretary of Congress, and William Barton, artist and consultant, borrowed from earlier designs and sketched what at length became the United States seal.

The misinterpretation of the seal as a Masonic emblem may have been first introduced a century later in 1884. Harvard Professor Eliot Norton wrote that the reverse was "practically incapable of effective treatment; it can hardly, (however artistically treated by the designer,) look otherwise than as a dull emblem of a Masonic fraternity."

Interpreting the Symbol:

The "Remarks and Explanations" of Thomson and Barton are the only explanation of the symbols' meaning. Despite what anti-Masons may believe, there's no reason to doubt the interpretation accepted by the Congress: "The Pyramid signified Strength and Duration: The Eye over it & the Motto allude to the many signal interpositions of providence in favor of the American cause."

The committees and consultants who designed the Great Seal of the United States contained only one Freemason, Benjamin Franklin. The only possibly Masonic design element among the very many on the seal is the eye of providence, and the interpretation of it by the designers is different from that used by Masons. The eye on the seal represents an active intervention of God in the affairs of men, while the Masonic symbol stands for a passive awareness by God of the activities of men.

The first "official" use and definition of the all-seeing eye as a Masonic symbol seems to have come in 1797 with The Freemason's Monitor of Thomas Smith Webb—14 years after Congress adopted the design for the seal. Here's how Webb explains the symbol:

"[A]nd although our thoughts, words and actions, may be hidden from the eyes of man, yet that All-Seeing Eye, whom the Sun, Moon and Stars obey, and under whose watchful care even comets perform their stupendous revolutions, pervades the inmost recesses of the human heart, and will reward us according to our merits."

The Eye in the Pyramid:

Besides the subtly different interpretations of the symbol, it is notable that Webb did not describe the eye as being in a triangle. Jeremy Ladd Cross published The True Masonic Chart or Hieroglyphic Monitor in 1819, essentially an illustrated version of Webb's Monitor. In this first "official" depiction of Webb's symbol, Cross had illustrator Amos Doolittle depict the eye surrounded by a semi-circular glory.

The all-seeing eye thus appears to be a rather recent addition to Masonic symbolism. It is not found in any of the Gothic constitutions, written from about 1390 to 1730. The eye—sometimes in a triangle, sometimes in clouds, but nearly always surrounded by a glory—was a popular Masonic decorative device in the latter half of the 18th century. Its use as a design element seems to have been an artistic representation of the omniscience of God, rather than some generally accepted Masonic symbol.

Its meaning in all cases, however, was that commonly given it by society at large—a reminder of the constant presence of God. For example, in 1614 the frontispiece of The History of the World by Walter Raleigh showed an eye in a cloud labeled "Providentia" overlooking a globe. It has not been suggested that Raleigh's History is a Masonic document, despite the use of the all-seeing eye.

The eye of Providence was part of the common cultural iconography of the 17th and 18th centuries. When placed in a triangle, the eye went beyond a general representation of God to a strongly Trinitarian statement. It was during this period that Masonic ritual and symbolism evolved, and it is not surprising that many symbols common to and understood by the general society made their way into Masonic ceremonies. Masons may have preferred the triangle because of the frequent use of the number 3 in their ceremonies: three degrees, three original grand masters, three principal officers, and so on. Eventually the all-seeing eye came to be used officially by Masons as a symbol for God, but this happened towards the end of the eighteenth century, after Congress had adopted the seal.

A pyramid, whether incomplete or finished, however, has never been a Masonic symbol. It has no generally accepted symbolic meaning, except perhaps permanence or mystery. The combining of the eye of providence overlooking an unfinished pyramid is a uniquely American, not Masonic, icon, and must be interpreted as its designers intended. It has no Masonic context.

Conclusion:

It's hard to know what leads some to see Masonic conspiracies behind world events, but once that hypothesis is accepted, any jot and tittle can be misinterpreted as "evidence." The Great Seal of the United States is a classic example of such a misinterpretation, and some Masons are as guilty of the exaggeration as many anti-Masons.

The Great Seal and Masonic symbolism grew out of the same cultural milieu. While the all-seeing eye had been popularized in Masonic designs of the late eighteenth century, it did not achieve any sort of official recognition until Webb's 1797 Monitor. Whatever status the symbol may have had during the design of the Great Seal, it was not adopted or approved or endorsed by any Grand Lodge. The seal's Eye of Providence and the Mason's All-Seeing Eye each express Divine Omnipotence, but they are parallel uses of a shared icon, not a single symbol.

---------------------------------

References:

Cross, Jeremy Ladd. Ex-U.S. Justice Department agent Cotton Malone is intrigued when he sees a purse snatcher fling himself from a Copenhagen tower to avoid capture, slitting his own throat on the way down for good measure. Further snooping introduces him to the medieval religious order of the Knights Templar and the fervid subculture searching for the Great Devise, an ancient Templar archive that supposedly disproves the Resurrection and demolishes traditional Christian dogma.

The trail leads to a French village replete with arcane clues to the archive's whereabouts, and to an oddball cast of scholar-sleuths, including Cassiopeia Vitt, a rich Muslim woman whose special-ops chops rival Malone's. Malone and company puzzle over the usual Code-inspired anagrams, dead language inscriptions and art symbolism, debate inconsistencies in the Gospels and regale each other with Templar lore, periodically interrupting their colloquia for running gun battles with latter-day Templar Master Raymond de Roquefort and his pistol-packing monks.

The novel's overcomplicated conspiracies and esoteric brainteasers can get tedious, and the various religious motivations make little sense. (Thankfully, the author soft-pedals the genre's anti-Catholicism.) But lively characters and action set pieces make this a more readable, if no more plausible, version of the typical gnostic occult thriller. (Feb.)

Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. It wasn't just because so many prominent members of the founding generation--George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and indeed 13 of the 39 signers of the Constitution--had been members. It was also because the rapidly growing republic and the fraternal society still held so many ideals in common. American republican values looked like Masonic values writ large: honorable civic-mindedness, a high regard for learning and progress, and what might be called a broad and tolerant religiosity.
